Extending Grace Discipling Generations
January 16, 2022 Speaker: The Rev. Mike McDonald Series: Vision Sunday
Topic: Vision Sunday Passage: John 2:1–11
Everywhere Jesus went, there was blessing and generosity and healing. John tells us in chapter one, “from his fullness we have all received grace upon grace” (John 1:12). Jesus has abundance for others. Right after the wine miracle, John narrates: “This, the first of his signs, Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested his glory” (2:11). How does this show his glory?
A favorite commentary on John’s gospel says this:
“In response to a humble request, Jesus provided wine in abundance, over a hundred gallons. Here is a free, full, extravagant outpouring, and it is precisely the Son of God’s gratuitous, gracious, generosity that is the glory revealed in this sign” (Rod Whitacre, “John,” IVP New Testament Commentary Series, p. 80).
The glory revealed here is Jesus’ gratuitous, gracious, generosity. We serve a God who owns everything and can do anything. To learn that his nature is to be extravagantly gracious is freeing and empowering for us. The word “scarcity” must leave our vocabulary. Grace Anglican Church is working to share Christ’s abundance with others. Our vision is the now familiar four words: Extending Grace Discipling Generations.
This past Sunday, Mike McDonald, our Senior Pastor, explained what these four words mean and how we’re doing as a church overall. The church is in a strong position and poised for a lot of great ministry this coming year. Our recently published Connection Guide tells of the many ministries available for spring. Our emphasis is still an extra focus on BELONGING. Please consider leading or joining one of the Life Groups for the Mark Study.
