A Recap of Sunday’s Sermon

Preaching Text: Luke 7:36-50

Luke records an event in which a woman anoints the feet of Jesus. He wants us to see that Jesus is the friend of all sinners. Simon the Pharisee invites Jesus to dinner at his home, but he does not extend much hospitality to Jesus. His comment in verse 39 indicates a mind full of doubt. In contrast, a “woman of the city” (read prostitute), comes with a faith-filled, pre-meditated plan to bless Jesus.

She is overwhelmed with emotion at Jesus’ acceptance of her and makes quite a scene, weeping, kissing and anointing Jesus’ feet. Simon is offended by this display, prompting Jesus to start a dialogue with Simon’s unspoken doubt. Jesus tells a parable teaching that proportional love is the natural response to God’s kindness. It generates a question for us all: “Based on how much I express love for God, how much forgiveness have I received?”

Jesus points out that Simon has not expressed much love for Jesus, but the woman has done so with great heart. Noting that her faith has saved her, Jesus declares her forgiven and blesses her to go in peace. She walks out of the house no longer in shame but with a renewed identity.

The acceptance of Jesus heals our dignity and identity.

She was once called a “woman of the city,” but now she is the “friend of Jesus.” Whether your sin is on par with prostitution or the more acceptable religiosity of Simon, our Lord offers acceptance and a new life. Follow the example of this woman by believing in Jesus and expressing love for him.

Taking it home: To be declared a friend of Jesus brings many benefits. Discuss the blessings of being a Christian. How can you express love for him in return?
