Lent begins this Wednesday, March 1st, as we receive ashes on our foreheads to remind us of our mortality and need for a Savior.  Lent is the 40-day period leading up to Easter.  It has six Sundays, which are “mini-Easters” and thus not counted as part of the 40 days.  Our preaching for these six Sundays will continue following the prescribed lectionary readings.

The series has been given the sub title: “by his wounds we are healed.” It comes from Isaiah 53, a well-known prophecy written seven centuries before Jesus’ birth.  The Lord entered into our affliction and brokenness and he continues to heal us and restore what was ruined by sin.  Each week we will see a different person from Scripture who suffered under some sin that Jesus later redeemed.  For example, the first sermon on March 5th will contrast Adam’s surrender to Satan’s temptation in the Garden of Eden with Jesus’ defeat of Satan’s temptation in a similar type of garden.  “Jesus Stood Where Adam Fell.”  The other sermon titles are: “Jesus Pierces the Skeptic’s Darkness,” “Jesus Enters Our Shame,” “Jesus Judges the Heart,” “Jesus Steps Into the Grave,” and then Palm Sunday leads us into Holy Week.

Please make every effort to fully engage this Lent, both by personal spiritual disciplines, as well as coming to all the services leading up to Easter.  The resurrection of Jesus is simply too magnificent to acknowledge with anything less than the 40 days of Lent.
